Programme for Parents/Caregivers

The programme for parents/caregivers of child witnesses is not presented on a modular basis but, instead, involves a discussion around identified topics, including:
  • Preparing Parents and Caregivers for Courtan introduction which involves exploring the emotional state of the parent/caregiver;
  • an overview of the programme attended by the child witness;
  • the benefits of court preparation;
  • the disclosure process;
  • the abused child;
  • children’s fears of going to court;the court process;
  • helping children prepare for court;a question session; and
  • practical considerations.

On completion of the programme the parent/caregiver will:
  • recognise his/her emotional state;
  • understand the programme the child will be attending;
  • recognise the importance of the child attending the programme;
  • understand the disclosure process;
  • understand the traumatic symptomologies the abused child may exhibit behaviourally;
  • understand and know how to address the possible fears the child may have bout going to court;
  • understand the court process;know how to help the child to prepare for court; and
  • know what to do when the child goes to court.
